Amsterdam.
Although my time spent in Amsterdam was very brief, I loved every minute of it. We filled our days with many adventures.
One of those adventures was a boat tour through the canals of Amsterdam.
Houseboats.
Amsterdam’s canals are filled with houseboats. In fact, there are around 2,500 legally moored houseboats in the more than 100 km of canals found in Amsterdam. But you may have already known that fact. Especially, if you’ve read Part One of my Houseboats of Amsterdam series.
Let’s head off for part two.

Great photos, Amy! I was in Amsterdam when I was 20, and I wish I had paid more attention to the houseboats. They’re great!
Thanks so much Julie! There’s so much to see there that it’s hard to take it all in. We were only there for 2 days, but all my teenagers talk about wanting to return. It was a first overseas destination for me and the teens. The hubby had done much traveling in his youth. 🙂
So awesome! I feel like once you’ve been bitten by the travel bug there’s no going back. Our family is opposite. My husband didn’t travel at all when he was younger, and he kind of fought wanting to do international trips. But now he really enjoys it. I hope you guys get to go back for longer!
I have never been to Amsterdam: thank you for the glimpse into this city. I live walking along canals, and these homes are so cheerful! Love the quotes: my favourite is the Knutson: never too late!

You caught quite a few boats! Did you walk, or did you capture them on a boat trip? Love that sight and site and you captured it well! It’s like some other capital cities in Europe, so full of history. Did you know there is a whole Jewish neighborhood in Amsterdam called the Jordaan? That’s why many of their Jewish expressions every Dutchman can understand.

I captured these on a boat trip. We did do quite a bit of walking, but I didn’t take near enough photos as it was drizzly much of our time there. I had heard of the Jordaan, but we didn’t end up getting over that way. I didn’t know it until we returned home that my Van Hoose line set sail from Amsterdam. They lived on Tuinstraat, which appears to be in the Jordaan district. If I had known that while I was there, I definitely would have moved it higher on our must see list. As it was, we had very little time and hope to return again someday.

I really do want to spend a week vacationing on a houseboat at some point. I’m sure Amsterdam would be as good a place as any to do it in 🙂

Wonderful photos Amy. I went to Amsterdam as part of my Contiki when I was just 23 so it was a loooong time ago. But I have good memories of the place. Thank you for this houseboat tour. 🙂

These are lovely! I’ve always wanted to do a river cruise living for a couple of weeks on house boat.
Just a few weeks ago I was wandering around San Francisco and was admiring several houseboats in an inlet I never knew about.
I’m always getting brochures from Viking River Cruises and they look so magical. Our nearby lake has a houseboat that you can rent and it has a slide and everything. Our summer’s haven’t worked out to book one yet.
That must have been a fun find in San Francisco. The dock in Naples had boats that would come in and stay for an extended time while they lived aboard. We used to walk along and admire them.
One of my goals is to go to Amsterdam one day and to live in a houseboat. I feel that would be the greatest experience for me!
I hope that you achieve your goal! Amsterdam is a beautiful city and the houseboats look like an amazing option for a living aboard 🙂
