Tuesday Truth #21

Tuesday Truth Quote of the Day

Tuesday Truth.

Number 21.

I think it’s so easy to fall into the trap of trying to do whatever it takes to be accepted.

I know that I want everyone to like me. And I am a people pleaser by nature. However, humans are a diverse set of creatures and sometimes people aren’t going to love me. I know, I know. It’s hard to believe. But it’s true. And sometimes that drive to please isn’t in alignment with the authenticity of my soul. It can be very draining to live out of alignment.

Do you agree?

Have you ever found yourself making choices that you didn’t really want to make just because that was the popular opinion?

And I’m not talking about those major “make it” or “break it” conversations that get people riled up. I’m talking about the little moments that add up day after day. Or the ones where it’s easier to not have an opinion. Or to not speak your mind.

Perhaps you haven’t.

If so, congratulations. You must be doing an excellent job at always choosing authenticity.

But for those of us who work at staying authentic, but still feel the pull of wanting to be liked even to the detriment of our inner selves, I have a message.

If you listen quietly then you can hear the voice that lets you know when you are not living in authenticity.

Please choose authenticity. You’ll be much happier that you did.

Let your light shine!

Amy

  1. Pretty hard to stay authentic in the 21st Century, especially in the U.S. We’re so worried about “offending” that we sugar coat stuff, hide the truth, coddle, and just aren’t true to ourselves much of the time. As I have gotten older, I don’t care too much about offending or coddling, I just pretty much speak my mind. It has cost me some favor, especially at work, but I think most people respect me for not going the “favorable” route all the time. Nice post Amy!

    1. Thanks, Jai! I do think that often is hard to stay authentic in today’s world. I do think that is one of the joys of growing older. You often become more confident in staying true to yourself!! 🙂

  2. I really like the word “authentic”, Amy. When I have difficulty making a decision, I make sure to have quiet time each day. The answers usually come to me when I try to let go and I try to not overthink. Not easy, and I am always a work in progress.

    1. I think that often in the busyness of the world we fail to spend those moments in quiet. But there is a great wonder in slowing down and really listening. Sometimes I still fail to heed it, but as you say, a work in progress. And progress is better than resignation about a space we are unhappy in. 🙂

  3. After being a teacher and instructor for 20+ years, I am fully aware that not everyone will like you, all of the time 😂 A thick skin is definitely required, and it can really mess with your self esteem if you let it!

  4. With age comes the ability to care a little less about what’s popular than about what’s genuine and true. As a teenager, it seemed more important to blend in and be like everyone else in order to fit in. Now, I could kick myself for not embracing my own uniqueness back then. Better late than never, though… 😀

  5. So very true and I think we’re all guilty of that at times. Trying to please people unauthentically. I’m getting better at being myself as I get older. xx

    1. I do think that is a wonderful part of getting older. You begin to feel more comfortable with who you are and realize that you only care to attract the people who like you for the real you. xx
