28 Day Photography Challenge

The monthly challenge is a 28 day photography challenge. Following the KISS principle, it'll be an A-Z challenge, with two other days of surprises. Check it out and join in!

Photography Challenge.

Even though I’m only a few weeks into my January challenge of eating a vegan diet,ย it’s already time to begin thinking about the challenge for February.

In light of the fact that I shared in my recent three year blogiversaryย postย ย that I wanted to begin capturing more photos, February’s challenge will be a 28-day photography challenge.

Photography Challenge Details.

Details, details.

Yep, we’re getting to those.

WordPress.com

I wanted to keep the photography challenge details easy since this is my first time organizing one.

I decided to follow the KISS principle.

Keep it simple stupid.

That saying seems kinda harsh so I wondered about its origins. Apparently, it was coined by Kelly Johnson who was the lead engineer at Lockheed Skunk Works. The engineers needed to design the jet aircraft in a way that would be repairable by the average mechanic in the field under combat conditions using only a handful of tools. So “stupid” refers to the relationship between the way things break and the sophistication available to repair them.

The key goal in design should be simplicity.

Note: origin information was sourced from this Wikipedia article.

I know that you didn’t ask for a history lesson, but I do love to know about the origin of words and sayings so I assume you’ll pardon my little aside (but know you’re a smidgen wiser if you didn’t already know the background of this term that’s widely used).

Simplicity.

So obviously I’m going for simplicity in this challenge.

February has 28 days this year (and most years for that matter).

I think you know where I’m going with this…

A through Z

A-Z Photography Challenge.

The premise is simple.

Each day will be a new letter of the alphabet.

You can choose to capture that in any way that strikes your imagination (i.e.-animal, nature, person, color, etc.)

But wait, you say!!

There are only 26 letters in the alphabet.

Yes, yes there are.

But don’t worry, I’ve got you taken care of.

Final Two Days of the Photography Challenge.

Day 27: something that makes you smile.

Day 28: photographer’s choice of inspiration.

I don’t plan to pull from my archives for these photos.

In order to get them out in a timely manner (because I’m limiting cell phone camera usage and there are uploading, etc. factors), they may be taken within that week.

However, don’t let that deter you if you have a day where this is impossible. Feel free to pull from your archives.

Just try to make more of the photos current rather than archives.

The whole goal is to get out and capture more photos.

My Gear.

Many of you know what gear I use to shoot my photography, but for those who don’t or need refreshing:

I shoot primarily on a Sony Alpha a7II which is a mirrorless system (and thus slightly lighter than many full-frame cameras. Sony has since come out with the a7 III.

I purchased my camera with this Sony 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 FE OSS Standard Zoom Lens.

Since then I’ve added this Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS Portrait Lens.

And also because I love to shoot landscapes and it was recommended by Chris Burkard in an article I read (don’t know who he is? I’ll link his Instagram. Ahh-mazing), I added this Sony 16-35mm Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens.

No better time of year to reflect.

See?!

Amazing!

His work (and many others) is definitely #goals!

I also have a tripod similar to this Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB 100 Aluminum Tripod with Ball Head (mine is model number 264AB).

And I still have my first DSLR camera, a Nikon D3200 .

But don’t feel like you can’t join along without a devoted camera.

Cell phones capture amazing photos these days.

You know what they say, the best camera is the one that you have with you.

I expect to limit my cell phone camera usage during this challenge but that’s mainly because I’m endeavoring to learn more about my camera.

A Love for Photography.

I’m also planning to spend more time this year learning more about the ins and outs of Lightroom.

I love photography and part of the journey of getting better is getting out and snapping photos more often.

I hope that you’ll join with me on this challenge.

Starting on February 1st, I’ll be sharing my daily photo from the photography challenge on my Instagram stories (you can find me here) and on the Bedlam & Daisies Facebook page (follow the page so you don’t miss any).

If you decide to share your on Instagram or in your Instagram stories, be sure to tag me @amy.lyon.smith. You can also tag me on Facebook by typing the @ symbol and then start typing Bedlam and Daisies and click on the page when you see it come up.

I can’t wait to see your photographic inspiration!

  1. The prompt on IG is hard enough for me. I think it’s maybe March or April #fmsphotoaday is the letters of the alphabet and then numbers. I usually skip most of that. Too hard.
I’ll leave you to this one. You’ll shine. Your photos will be splendid.

    1. I don’t know how you manage to do the prompt on IG. I can do anything for a month. Although I suspect this one will be pretty challenging! ๐Ÿ™‚ I sure hope they’re splendid! Or decent at a minimum. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Share them here.
